Douglas Major, Organist

Mr. Douglas Major has been on the staff of the Washington Cathedral since 1974 as assistant organist and choirmaster, and in 1979 was made the associate organist/choirmaster to Richard W. Dirksen. He has played recitals in twenty states, England and Ireland, and appeared as soloist in the 1982 American Guild of Organists' national convention in Washington, D.C. Mr. Major received his Bachelor of Music (organ) from Webster College, St. Louis, Missouri, studying with Dr. Ronald Arnatt, and was associate organist and choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral, St. Louis, prior to coming to Washington. He is an associate of the American Guild of Organist and holds the choirmaster diploma of the AGO. Paul Hume of The Washington Post acclaimed one of Major's performances as a "smashing all-American organ recital ... winning himself two ovations along the way... The playing was marked by both elegance and excitement, the latter reaching spectacular heights on 'The Stars and Stripes Forever'" (July 5, 1980).
