on the coast, the one from which Bache was lost. Frank Burzel and others crossed the Bald hills and struck the S. Fork of Trinity finding men there before them. Sandsbury who had come with the Sonoma party was cutting a trail at the same time Trinidad had been previously founded. On Mills' way over to South fork he met some Frenchmen, presumes of the Trinidad party in a state of starvation.
He supposed from the remarks of the Cutter's people that they knew of Humboldt bay. They had not then sent a boat into Eel River, but recommended the Ryerson to do so that in case of need they might help them while there. The Ryerson remained a couple of weeks in the river and after leaving it went into Humboldt bay & her passengers settled Eureka and Union. The Laura Virginia people founded Humboldt. The cutter did not go into the bay but went on above. During the summer a great number came into the Trinity from Sonoma & the valley.
Jacoby, Liscom & Frank Burzel were all in the Ryerson.

Came in Bark Tarquin, Vincent, in the fall of 1850 to mouth of Klamath. She was the third vessel there. She did not enter, being wrecked at the mouth & no vessel has since been in. He considers Gold Bluff as originally a deposit from the Klamath which ran in that direction. The bluffs are in strata of clay & gravel with whole trees & roots partially petrified at different heights from the base up. They are in height about 500 feet in places & cut up by gullies, running toward the beach. They extend for 5 or 6 miles along the coast. The gold is unquestionably from the bluff & not direct from the river.
The massacre at Tompkins' ferry took place at the close of June 1851. This was undoubtedly premeditated as a packer named Bender was killed the day before on his way from the ferry. His partner killed an Indian who pursued him. The same evening the elder Blackburn was killed near the house on his way there from Elk camp
