The Man's Guide to Necking
by Charles Hix.
The best male neckers this season will add dash with scarves, glitter with chains and pendants, macho with unbuttoned-down shirts, and conversation with a revival of new-fashioned ties. So, long live necking! Necking is easy. Necking is fun.

ASCOT TRACES Gone are the days of the stuffy ascot. To prove that it's personal expression that counts in necking, a few weeks back Wallach's Fifth Ave. store asked Tony Roberts, who is currently appearing in Absurd Person Singular to demonstrate how to add variety to clothing roles with knots and colored squares. A Wallachs executive, citing high interest from male observers, told us the store's biggest individual seller is the 36-inch square, "a traditional 'woman's-shaped scarf, in Indian silk with lots of bounce and fluff." Number two is a long

and narrow scarf. The new necking items, (frequently under $10) accompany blazers and safari suits, as well as open-to-the-waist Western shirts and V-necks. A snappy new idea is wrapping an oblong scarf- with the ends initially over the rear shoulder blades-fully around the neck, then tieing in front, just at the Adam's apple. The same scarf can also be tied loosely at the breastbone over a turtleneck.

HANGING LOOSE Come summer and more men start grinning and baring it -- the neck, plus a healthy amount of chest, preferably well tanned. This season, self-adornment adds a new dimension to necking. M & J.
