A Beautiful morning the sun came out early & the Day throughout was unusually fine. a mail came in a Letter from [[Matt?]] & 2 Papers from my Father written a Letter to my Father Matt Sergt Shorter in the afternoon 2 more Papers from my Father late in the afternoon taken a walk to town, as far as the Post office. Reported Fight before Richmond between the armies of Grant & Lee in which the latter was worsted to a considerable extent.

Morning clear & fine nothing transpiring around the Hospital all Quiet. a Letter to Sergt. Maj. Trotter. Reported that Surg Delany & a coloured captain had arrived in the town of Beaufort no news from the front. the Day was unusually fine though it was quite chilly in the Afternoon
