Nov. 23" | Balsley I.B. By J.M. Morehead [[Footnote 1]] | Greensboro N.C.  Nov. 1865.  States that he is the owner of land in Greensboro N.C. on which the Confdt. Govt. cut down timber and erected Warehouses &c and made a wagon yard, greatly damaging the property.  That before the surrender of Johnston to Genl. Sherman the Confdt. Govt. by its Qr. Master turned over the buildings to him as compensation for the damage, but continued to occupy them until the surrender, when the Federal Govt. took possession and still occupy.  States that officers of the Freedmens Bureau claim the buildings on the ground that the Confd. Govt. had no right to dispose of them. Requests that they be turned over to him when they are no longer needed for the use of the Army.

Thinks that is her intention to keep the children hidden & if the trial goes against her, to run them off to England. States that attempts at bribery have been used. Quite able counsel has been detained for Mrs. Smith.
