Reports that on the 29th inst by his order the Sheriff of Jackson Co arrested and brought to the Court House at Webster for examination several persons charged with breaking open the jail and taking from there a freedman, who they beat severely turned him loose & drove him from town &c.

Forwards letter of M. McGahee who encloses petition of Freedmen in his Dist asking of the Bureau aid to the extent of $8.00 per month for one year to assist in supporting their school.  Gives reasons for declining to give their title to the land, but promises to help the school when possible.  Recommends that the aid within asked for be granted.
