To: Prof. S. F. Baird.
Director Smithsonian Institution
Dear Sir:

I have the honor to submit the following report of the Department of Ethnology for the months of July, August and September, 1886.

During these months the force in the Department of Ethnology was much broken up by leaves of absence.

Mr. Sweeney did excellent work in going entirely over the material belonging to the class of personal adornment, arranging it by tribes, getting together parts long separated and giving to it great additional value.

I am very happy to draw the attention of the Director of the Museum to the increased safety of perishable articles brought about by Mr. Hough in the matter of poisoning.
