the department was practically in charge of Mr. Hough who has devoted his attention to entering several large and interesting collections. The department has been fortunate during the month in having the services of Mr. Heli Chatelain, interpreter to the Eclipse Expedition, who has spent several years in West Africa near San Paolo de Loanda. Mr. Chatelain was accompanied by a native negro boy. The experience of Mr. Chatelain and the perfect familiarity of the boy with the use of a great many of our W. African specimens were of the greatest use to us in preparing labels for things about which we previously knew very little. Especial mention is here made of 114
