7. WHAT MATERIAL FROM YOUR DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN TRANSMITTED TO STUDENTS AND INVESTIGATORS [[underlined]] OUTSIDE OF THE MUSEUM [[/underlined]] DURING THE YEAR, AND IN CONNECTION WITH WHAT SPECIAL INVESTIGATION WAS THE MATERIAL NEEDED: IT SHOULD BE STATED [[underlined]] IN EACH CASE [[/underlined]] WHETHER OR NOT THE MATERIAL HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE MUSEUM.

The only material of this Department that has been sent out of the Museum of the purpose of study has been that which has been temporarily withdrawn by the Bureau of Ethnology for the purpose of Illustrating.

It is the policy of this Department to induce investigators to conduct their studies in the building surrounded by the collections rather than to have the specimens sent away from the building for the purpose of study. The result of this method is salutary both to the student himself, who would see many things that he otherwise would overlook, and to the Curator who is enabled to obtain a great deal of information from the student while engaged in his researches.
