Oct. 1, Sunday.
Went down across the river through [[Ristan's?]] pasture into [[Vills?]].  Here I came to 2 small ravines close together.  As I was in the second one a flicker flew up and uttered his loud [[underlined]] ke-aw [[/underlined]], bobbing and looking at me curiously.  Then he flew across the river to a post and after a few seconds flew to the ground.  When it hopped its manner was exactly like that of a robin.  He had a

queer habit of stretching his head up and looking around for insects.  It would hop after insects quite fast.  When digging - which he did just as though he was drilling a hole in a tree - he used his tail to brace himself with.  When digging he stopped to swallow now and then.
