The roots of many of America's predominantly black colleges and universities stretch deeply into the nation's past. Today these tradition-rich institutions seek to carry out their unique role amdist circumstances that have created new challenges. Most black schools emerged in the years after the Civil War when Federal authorities and State Recontruction governments provided support for educational programs. The situation has changed dramatically in recent times. Desegregation policies have tended to break down barriers and many blacks have entered previously all white colleges and universities. This opening of new doors has created a problem for the traditional black colleges which now face a reduced pool of students. Black colleges have responded forcefully, upgrading their offerings, recruiting increasingly well qualified instructors and moving toward integration of their own student bodies. They continue to perform a vital function providing the educational cornerstone that makes possible so many of the achievements to be detailed in the calendar pages that follow.
