Dr. F. D. Paterson
President, Tuskegee Institute
Tuskegee Institute, Alabama

My dear Dr. Patterson:

Permit me to express my regret that you are leaving Tuskegee Institute. Although I am not connected with the Institute, during my years of work in this community, and particularly during the past 18 years, I have acquired a considerable amount of respect and admiration for you and the work you have been doing and have become deeply interested in your program. Because of my keen interest, your leaving at the height of your intellectual powers and capabilities causes me to entertain a bit of apprehension as to the future of the Institute. Notwithstanding this, however, I must admit that your decision is perhaps very wise and should set an example for others whose work involves considerable tension, as well as physical and mental activities.

I hope sincerely that the new work upon which you are embarking proves to be less strenuous and affords you more time for relaxation and recreation. I have no doubt at all that you will continue to make a real contribution, not only to the welfare of the American Negro but to the country as a whole.

With best wishes for continued success and again expressing my regret at your departure from these parts, I am

Sincerely yours,
