[[preprinted]] Office of the President PHILANDER SMITH COLLEGE Founded 1868 LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS [[/preprinted]] March 18, 1953 President F. D. Patterson Tuskegee Institute Tuskegee Institute, Alabama Dear President Patterson: Please find enclosed herewith a carbon of my letter, which is self-explanatory. I read with mixed emotions the announcement of your resignation effective June 1, 1953, in our daily paper here a few days ago. Of course I regret to lose the fellowship and sense of leadership which you naturally give to the college presidents of our land. On the other hand, I rejoice in the fact that you are pulling down from the strenuous activity of the presidency of a major institution in time to enjoy some life with your family. Frankly, I am highly hopeful that I too may find some other job in the near future. By all means, I hope never to extend my service beyond the twenty year period. Cordially yours, [[signed]] M LaFayette Harris President MLH:wm Dictaphoned Encl.
