Dr. F.D. Patterson
Tuskegee Institute

Dear Dr. Patterson:

In an editorial of this morning's Atlanta Constitution, we note your resignation from the presidency of Tuskegee Institute to accept a position with the Phelps-Stokes Fund. Congratulation! In your new capacity you will have a fine opportunity to continue your invaluable services to Negro education.

Perhaps you recall our conversation in your home several months ago. Part of it had to do with the need for certain publications of an historical nature relative to the growth and development of Tuskegee. Now that you are soon to be leaving, it seems to me, the need for such publications is multiplied. Naturally, because of my new profession, I am thinking how appropriate [[underline]] A Picturized Story of Tuskegee Institute [[/underline]] would be. Such a volume artistically done would be a lasting memorial to the Institute and to those, like yourself, who have conceived and directed its realization. Since the Institute's 75th anniversary is only three years from now, and since the 50th anniversary program covered the period up to that time, the volume I have in mind might well be devoted to the period, 1931-1956. The title could be formulated to indicate this.

To do a picturized story of the kind suggested above would require painstaking work. A search would have to be made for the pictorial evidences. Many of the pictures would have to be restored and otherwise modified for the purpose. Drawings and etchings based on earlier photographs would be desirable. Even more recent photographs would have to be worked over to meet desirable standards. Historical landmarks, outstanding material developments, significant activities of all kinds, memorable occasions, famous personages -- all these and many more should be included in the volume. Many current developments should be emphasized and illustrated. The written content of the volume should be comparatively brief. Some of the picturized magazines are making this type of presentation effective. Comparatively few, now-a-days, are attracted by wordy discourse. Nearly everyone is attracted by beautiful pictures. Of course, there is still a place for lengthy writing.

Needless to say, A Picturized Story of Twenty-five Years at Tuskegee would be costly. It would need the liberal support of a Fund. erhaps you will be in position to manage this requirement. Incidentally, as you probably have suspected, I would be interested in doing the work of "pictorial editor." With some help in getting the raw facts, I could do the writing also. But the time left for such an undertaking is already short.

With best wishes, [[signature]]
