May 21, 1953

Dear Dr. Patterson:

Mrs. Needham and I were shocked to read in one of the newspapers when we were driving north from Florida, the news of your leaving Tuskegee. Shortly after getting back to Chicago I saw Roy Newton at a luncheon and we naturally began talking about you. We agreed that you must be convinced that your new association will offer an even greater opportunity for service.

I have been hoping that Mrs. Needham and I might be seeing you and Mrs. Patterson. We would like very much to know more of your plans and what your work is going to be. You can be sure, of course, that no matter where you go we will be following you in our thoughts and wishing you well in all your projects.

Sincerely,
