Dr. F. D. Patterson, President
Tuskegee Institute
Alabama

Dear Dr. Patterson:

This is to state that I am sorry at this time to learn that you are giving up the Presidency of Tuskegee Institute. Your contribution to the success of Tuskegee Institute justifies my making the above statement.

I congratulate you in your new field of work and I sincerely hope that you will still hold a close connection with the said Institution by your advice and wisdom.

Dr. Patterson, some years ago Professor Carver and I under-took to write a botany text which identified plants by related groups, but in few and simple terms. The said Botany could be studied easily by 8th grade students, advanced and college students. Professor Carver's phase of the work was devoted chiefly to the native plants. My phase was devoted to cultivated plants--their identification, their utilization and care.

Just what is lacking in Professor Carver's part, and what is required for completion, I do not know. I could only tell after I have reviewed what he has. The balance needed, I could complete.

The revenue gained from the sale of such a text would go to his (Carver) laboratory.

Please let me have your opinion and wishes in the matter, and I will come to Tuskegee and discuss the same with you.

Yours truly,
