A considerable part of the time was devoted to the entering of the large collection of Californian specimens collected during the Wheeler Survey; but as the entering is not yet finished, the full record will be given in the Report for February.
A series of specimens illustrating the manufacture of shell and bone fish-hooks among the Indians formerly inhabiting Southern California, more especially the Santa Barbara Islands and the adjacent coast, was sent from this Department to the London International Fisheries Exhibition in 1883. These objects have come back in good condition, and are now again exhibited in their proper places.
A collection from Alaska, presented by C.L. McKay (as stated in the Report for December, 1883) has been put on exhibition in Case 82.
The collection from the shell-heaps at Cape Mendocino, Humboldt County, California, presented by John J. McLean, and that from the vicinity of Riceville, Washington County, Wisconsin, presented by J.E. Gere (both mentioned in the Report) have been placed on exhibition in Case 82.
