Israel now exports computers, tools, aircraft and diamonds. There's even a fashion industry of sorts: witness Begged Or, Israel's high style leather sportswear house. (At a recent showing at Begged Or a young Swedish model expressed shock upon learning that the coat she was showing was pig-skin. "Isn't there a law about that here?" she asked. "No, my dear," said designer Leslie Fulop. "Perfectly O.K.--just as long as you don't eat it.") The industry which has really taken giant steps in Israel though is tourism. "I opened my newspaper the other day," said Gila, "and the headline read 'Israel is full!' Just imagine it, there were so many visitors, they couldn't let anybody else in." A number of years ago tourists to Israel were almost exclusively Jews interested in checking the progress of a country in which many felt a proprietary interest. But now with a Hilton in Tel Aviv, a golf course in Caesarea and sailboats on the Sea of Galilee, tourism to Israel is expanding. "I was really surprised to discover that you don't have to be Jewish to love Israel," said one young Californian lured there simply out of curiosity. "But this trip has convinced me that the sense of walking with history, the fascination of observing a young country in the making, the physical beauty of the land are universally appealing." "I'm frankly jealous of the Israelis," said another tourist. "They have a choice of a hundred things to get involved in and in any one of them they are really needed. It seems to me," he continued, "that the Israelis I've met may not find glory, but they sure as hell get a lot of satisfaction." Gila expressed a surprisingly similar sentiment in summing up what growing up in Israel meant to her as an actress -- "This is a tiny country with a very strange language, so if you want to be an international star it is not the place for you. But if you want only to act, to perform, then Israel is paradise."
