J. D. McQuire, Ellicott City, Md. Dec. 14/88.

Has two specimens. "One I found in a quarry lying beside a roughly shaped soapstone bowl that had only one or two pecks made toward scooping out the interior. The blade fits into these pecks [[underlined]]exactly[[/underlined]]. The other specimen was given me by a workman in a quarry, who had no idea of what it was. "In cleaning the surface," he informed me, "this specimen had fallen out. "There was a withe tied around the stone, the handle or heavy part toward the face, then the switch ends were wrapped around the stone and tucked in in front." Has gotten many implements from this quarry. Does not think that this adze would have answered for canoes.
