Norman Spang, Etna, Pa. [[strikethrough]]but letter written from 65 Promenade des Angluis, Nice, Fr. Jan. 1/89.[[/strikethrough]]

Has had, at different periods, perhaps 100 specimens "in size and shape about like your cuts." They were fron N.C., S.C., Ky., Southern Ills., Mo., and Ark. This type is very common in some parts of N.C., Mo., and Ark. He always thought them to be digging implements, but they were possibly used for a variety of purposes. "I either have, or have had, a few specimens showing unmistakeable evidence of wear from hafting on the sides---such specimens are rare as the chert from which they are made is not only very hard, but presents angular cleavage plans quite unfavorable for showing wear caused by friction against the handle.

Upon my return to America [[underline]]next May[[/underline]], it is quite possible that I may be able to send you a few specimens from Mo., or Ark. The type is not represented in Western Penn., as far as I know. If represented at all in Ohio, it is more scarce than in the localities I have mentioned."

"Fron" misspelt in first paragraph of original text.
