At X E. of Hudson the road goes down & again up on edge of terrace. It is gravelly & somewhat coarse-sandy at both points. [[line]] Between sec. [[insertion]] ^ S. 1/2 [[/insertion]] 28 & 29- S. of [[insertion] ^ Rock [[/insertion]] river there are two road cuts showing 3-4 ft yellow loess (nodular above) & Kansan below. The ridges toward river are Kansan - boulders on slope. Loess on top. Saw springs below at about terrace height down the river. At bluff there is a nice streamlet coming out of some dune ravines & it has much sand worked in bed. At N. exposure on same line (Z) the yellow loess runs down into fine laminar etc sand (probably wind blown) A line of boulders appears at the base of the sand on a gray silty layer. [[end page]] [[start page]] 21 In banks of creek at foot of hill the gray silt (Aftonian ?) rises over 20 ft. & springs came out above it. Where freshly worked it is tough & whitish. The creek has much sand [[line]] The bluffs at river are about 135 ft. above (lower) valley. [[line]] At Iowa end of bridge across the Big Sioux a road cut shows 4 or 5 ft. of sand (silty) and under it a bouldery layer & gravel.
