[[underline]] Sep. 14 (Wednesday) 1910 [[/underline]] Drove from Missori Valley to Cox & to Loveland. The material excavated from Boyer cut-off E of Mo. Valley is like the Kansan joint clay (bluish, calcareous) but with scant pebbles. Visited Cox pit. Cox has base of pachyderm skull, showing foramen, & wants to keep it until co. fair time (ends Sep. 30). Secured several small bones & a mastodon tooth. Collected flowers in locations & S.E. along base of bluffs. Drove south, & returned to go up hill (S. ridge) after plants. Visited J. Hoffman at the cement works who has 3 plates (cemented together) of an elephant's tooth. Wouldn't part with it. He evidently thinks there is a fortune tied up in it. Also received (from the undertaker) a fine tooth which bears all the Aftonian ear-marks. It is [[end page]] [[start page]] 93 It is evidently [[underline]] Mammut mirificum [[/underline]]; & was found in the belongings of a young man who worked here for a short time in the R.R. shops, & who committed suicide some months after at Newfine's house. Left Mo Valley at 2.15 P.M. for Council Bluffs.
