there were a ^great number of Sparrows.  They were singing.  The young Song Sparrows gave a queer mixture but the old ones sang clearly.  Heard a Red-winged Blackbird sing over towards Hacketts.  Saw 9 Bluebird then I went home.

Tonight Mrs. Russel told me that a partridge had been in her yard.  She said we called it a quail.  What we call a partridge she said was a pheasant.

October 4, Thursday.
This morning I got up when it was just light.  As soon as it was light enough to see well the English Sparrows began. 
Went down in the fields.  Saw the Song Sparrows just waking up.  They called to each other with notes like [[underlined]] tseet [[/underlined]].  they were very shrill.  As soon as the sun appeared the Meadowlarks sang.  Heard the Robins at the roost.
Heard a chicadee whistle [[underlined]] spring here [[/underlined]].
