Saw a large hawk soaring. It had a dark body and a white tail. It must have been an American Rough-legged Hawk. Then we went home. 

This afternoon I saw another large flock of about 75 Goldfinches by Hummer's. [[?]] They fed and sang. Some drank water in the road. 
Saw about 15 crows up on the hill. They were mating. One would fly out and circle and balance on outspread wings and another would chase it: they cawed loudly. 

This evening I heard a quail whistle Bobwhite twice down in the meadows. 

March 17, Sunday. 
This morning Mat Patterson Percy Knapp and I went over in J. Hackett's woods. Heard nuthatches woodpeckers and bluejays. Suddenly we heard a faint tru-ally [[?]] and then another and I knew that the Bluebirds had come. They were over by
