I am sorry Gen'l Alger's physical condition seems so serious.  He is doing wisely in ridding himself of political responsibility.  He has won his public-honor-spurs on many fields and he retires in honor and in good time.  If you have a chance to tell him my thoughts on his action I hope you will do so.
