Dear Colonel Hecker

A letter from Mr. Kennedy reached me at Beyrouth yesterday just as I was starting for Damascus. The letter brought news of your sisters passing, and, I wish, though very late, to express my sympathy in your sorrow.  Through this recent loss, I believe you are left with out brother or sister, and this I am sure, brings to you a certain sense of peculiar loss: a singular loneliness, which in its own way is hard to face, aside from the many other feelings always stirred
