Mr. Watson had previously advised the Chancellor that the committee unanimously recommended the name of Dr. Murray Gell-Mann of California be submitted for approval by the Board of Regents and subsequently for approval of the Congress. The members of the Executive Committee suggested in keeping with the Regents' caution concerning its membership, that further inquiries be made of the proposed new candidate as is customary in the selection of any new Regent. As a result, it was found that Dr. Gell-Mann enjoys an excellent reputation in his field of science as well as personally.

Mr. Austin read Mr. Watson's letter to the Secretary of April 2, 1974, transmitting a copy of his letter to the Chief Justice dated April 2, 1974, which follows.
