[[circled]] 25 [[/circled]] [[underlined]] Cebus capucinus [[/underlined]], Jun. 24, 1959, II [[lines run vertically down the left margin]] might suggest that the Q is essentially a very high intensity pattern, in which either attack or escape may be predominant at different times. If the Q should, however, to be always produced when the escape drive is relatively strong, then it would be strictly comparable to the Q of the Pygmy Marmosets. I wonder???? Four of the animals uttered a few typical Q notes, followed by a few typical ([[underlined]] i.e. monosyllabic [[/underlined]], "Ah") AlB's, and then shut up fairly soon. One of the new animals, however, gave a few Q Notes, and then quite a lot of typical monosyllabic AlB's, and then a great many notes which were essentially identical with typical AlB's except for the fact that they were definitely [[underlined]] bisyllabic [[/underlined]] "Aha." I shall call these bisyllabic notes "AlBB." The animal continued to utter AlBB's almost uninterruptedly, for at least a half hour, as long as I continued to sit near the cage! The behavior of this animal would confirm the hypothesis that the AlB is produced by weaker motivation than the Q, and would suggest that the AlBB is produced by weaker motivation than the AlB. The behavior of this animal who uttered so many AlBB's while the other animals uttered none is another indication of a distinctive aspect of the White faces' behavior of which I have just gradually become aware. The ritualized patterns of White-faces seem to be much more variable than those of any other monkeys I have studied (with the possible or probable exception of [[underlined]] Ateles [[/underlined]]). Another example of this variability is provided by the old [[female symbol]] X. She continues to perform a very great deal of HL; but none of the other White-faces I have watched have ever shown the slightest trace of HL!!! (although they may do a lot of ordinary-looking scratching when obviously "upset" or "nervous"). The form of X's HL has remained quite the same as before; and she continues to perform whenever I approach the cage. All
