III  [[underlined]] Investigations prosecuted during the fiscal year 1885-1886 [[/underlined]].

The Curator has continued his studies upon the toothed whales during the year but has published only the following short papers (for date of publication, &c., see bibliography, p.    .):

1. Description of a new species of [[underlined]] Mesoplodon [[/underlined]], [[underlined]] M. Stejnegeri [[/underlined]], obtained by Dr. Leonhard Stejneger in Bering Island.

2. A note upon the Hyperoodon semijunchis of Cape.

In May by invitation of the U.S. Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries the Curator visited the porpoise fishery of the Wilmington Oil and Leather Co. at Hatteras, N.C., and obtained much valuable information regarding the life history of the Bottle-nosed dolphin, [[underlined]] Tursiops tursio [[/underlined]], which is caught in great numbers at that point
