The [[strikethrough]]b[[/strikethrough]] outbreak of war at the opening of this decade caused the recall of the numerous surveying and exploring expeditions then in the western country, and ^[[in consequence]] the collections of mammalia and other objects ^[[which in previous years the Institution had derived from these sources]] fell off suddenly.  The expeditions were revived [[strikethrough]]at[[/strikethrough]] ^[toward]] the close of the decade, - or rather replaced by geological surveys, - and from these last the Institution received no less material than in former years.

The collections characteristic of this period, however, are those which were [[strikethrough]]deriv[[/strikethrough]] derived from the expeditions set on foot by the Institution itself, - either alone, or with the co-operation of the Philadelphia ^[[and Chicago]] Academies of Sciences, [[strikethrough]]the Chicago[[/strikethrough]] the Boston Society of Natural History and other similar organizations, - and from other generously sus-
