in the gulches, but land chiefly grass covered & denuded of trees. Country back of Santow a great plain with rocky ridges farmland. Tow large towns some 30 miles up the river supply the port with trade. Streets about port rather wide + neat. Homes of several stories as in Kowloon. Steamers bring bean-cakes chiefly as imports from other Chinese ports. In fruit market I saw laichis, Loonans, yellow watermelons, mangoes, bananas, pears, grape-fruit, but no vegetables practically.
Drawn-work, pewter, lace, + porcelain is manufactures here. Many [[pomeria??]] was seen in blossom. Left port at 5:30 P.M. weather clear
