[[encircled]] 17[[/encircled]]We left Amoy at noon. Weather bright + warm with a gently head breeze. The entrance to this harbour is marked by several islands + [[strikethrough]]many[[/strikethrough]] stone walled ports were seen on all the prominent points guarding the entrance. Cannon in places were in sight mounted on round stone platforms. Steamed along the coast in quiet water without any apparent swell. [[strikethrough]]W[[/strikethrough]]Atmosphere excessively moist like that of Washington in summer. All my clothes hanging in room damp + moist. Safety match scratching surfaces were so soft that they are useless
I have seldom seen a more saturated climate. Night not so slept on deck where it was comfortable. Two lady missionaries came up from Amoy with us. They report bandits in the back country more prevalent since revolution than formerly. Tigers common + often caught in traps in their district.
