went over to another monastery north of this one where a tiger has been reported. Kellogg told me last night of the great ignorance of most Chinese. Few of them realize that the world is round or that it travels [[strikethrough]] about [[/strikethrough]] around the sun. Nor do they know the nature of the stars. A Chinaman in giving a lecture on the Panama Canal & its benefits to China spent all his lecture hour explaining [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] to the audience that the world was round. The worship in this [[strikethrough]] Confucian [[/strikethrough]] Buddhist temple here goes on regularly day & night but only one or two priests take part. There is hitting of a gong at dusk with thunder from a drum. At 4 a.m. there is some drumming & [[rattling?]] also and at sunrise again. The inner court of the main temple has 2 large ^[[gilt]] figures of [[strikethrough]] Confusus [[/strikethrough]] Buddha & from the ceiling are suspended square lanterns. On the floor are round [[strikethrough]] jess [[/strikethrough]] prayer mats but the whole interior is dingy & crude.
