While we were at Ling Sioh Caldwell was attacked on his skin by a leach & when he first noticed his trouble he found a stream of blood flowing into his shoe & dropping on the brick pavement of the monastery. This is a land leach & deposits in the blood a serum which prevents it from coagulating so that [[strikethrough]] if [[/strikethrough]] the blood cannot coagulate. This was the first leach Caldwell had ever seen. Andrews says these leaches are common in the Phillipines & Borneo. China is doubtless their northern limit.
