: Red sandstone denuded country

Camped at noon on a fine grassy prairie dotted by pine trees.  No spurs are used on riding animals, not even by Europeans as the animals do not understand them & refuse to go forward when spurred.  The salt we have met in such large quantities on the road come from wells near Tali-fu  Reached Tro-Feng at 6 P.M. & camped in a temple in the town.  [[strikethrough]] Red [[/strikethrough]] Near our noonday camp we passed thru a grove of sturdy chestnut trees loaded with burs in rows & cultivated. [[strikethrough]] Yes [[/strikethrough]] Before noon, at about 10 A.M. we passed thru a very denuded country of which the town of Yao-chen was the center.  The formation was dark
