Flowers abundant, snapdragons, balsams, clematis, purple ranuncleus, Potentilla [[strikethrough]] etc. [[/strikethrough]] wild Sweet pea, etc. Stopped at noon an hour at a small village for lunch. The road most of the way follows a large bright red river, a tributary of the Yangstze. The valley of the river is wide & planted to rice. We reached Chu-Siang which is a large walled city on the river, at 4:30. We took a short cut road to the town & in crossing a single plank bridge my horse fell off onto the middle pillar & hung there on his belly &
