(16) Departed at 7 A.M. in foggy weather which continued until 9 A.M.  In the woods & bush country at the temple I set 20 rat traps but caught nothing or were they disturbed.  I cannot account for this  absolute lack of rodents [[strikethrough]] on the [[/strikethrough]] in Yunan.  The country here was moist, the soil soft & bushes bearing berries & nuts abundant.
In N. Am. we have no such [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] [[vacums?]] of mammals.  About rice fields they have been [[strikethrough]] but [[/strikethrough]] exterminated by trapping perhaps.  Passed thru the city of Chen-nan at 10 A.M.  Street wide as in Yun-nan-fou.  Country hilly [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] soil brick red & pine clad.  Road followed up the Isa-Ling Ha which we have followed for five days. It runs east into the Yangtze.
