speak of the robbers as thief-men & of beef [[strikethrough]] out [[/strikethrough]] from a cow which died of disease or naturally as die-cow
The salt caravans have ceased on our road as we have gotten past the salt wells district which is north of Kwang-Tung & Chu Hsiung
After our lunch hour we travelled two hours to Sah [[Tscha?]] a small town where we camped in a temple outside the city wall. On the way [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] C. shot a tupia which ran along the road & stopped to look at us. We discovered that this was the small olive squirrel we have seen for several days on the road in bushes. C. also shot a gray squirrel in [[?there]]. Much of the country today has been tree less, but grass covered altho the red earth was seen in some places.

Transcription Notes:
Chu Hsiung = Chu Hsing? [[guessed via Google text search incl salt wells]] C or G who is mentioned as having shot something - letter not truly legible, but many pages ago he has discussed several accounts of Caldwell having shot something, and subsequently abbreviated it to C. in the same context, so this is a guess.
