type is a bell set in an arch above the back of the ox but some also had bells suspended at the throat in the usual fashion. Nearly all of these oxen were a rufous red in color & were as uniform as the black buffalo in coloration. I have seen a few pure white, albino buffalo.

In the early morning it was cold until 10 A.M. when we left the hill country & descended into the Shih-tien plain. This was similar to that of Yun-Chang but more tropical ^[[tho only 500 feet lower]]. Many fields of tall ripe sugar cane were seen here growing or interspersed with rice fields, much of the land was flooded & every inch of it was cultivated. The bordering hills were brown & bare except where groves of pine trees had been lift for fire-wood
