plain loquat trees bearing ripe golden fruit were seen, a few banana stalks with fruit were also noted but citrus fruit trees were not noted.  We reached Shih-tien at 5 P.M. & made camp in a temple at one end of the town.  The place is small & with out any wall or fortifications
A post office & magistrate are located here.  The town is situated at the extreme lower end of the valley where high hills or [[?metus]] close in & make a deep V shaped valley of this part of the plain.  During the afternoon I saw 2 flocks of the tawny geese in ponds but they were too many for our prowess.  At Shih-tien the magistrate who visited us remarked that deforestation on the surrounding hills was due
