In one of the large ponds where some boatmen were fishing we saw a flock of 15 tawny geese, two of which we shot.  I shot 15 grey doves & 1 European lapwing.  The crested mina bird which haunts buffalos & often rides on their backs was seen here & 2 were collected.  The large black & white Starling was also collected today & preserved. On the road many beasts laden with large packs of drab paper were met.  This is made of bamboo at Yao Kuan.  No sugar cane was seen in the fields. The camp was pitched in Ho-wei, 10 li below Yau Kuan
