[[margin blank]] Feb. 1 [[squared circle]] Our camp was about 6000 feet on a small hill but it was unusually cold at night with frost but no ice.  Warm mist steamed up from the large canals & flooded fields.  The traps caught nothing, the soil being a hard red clay & dry at this season.  At tiffin time we stopped well up in the hills at 7000 feet amid a forest growth of alder,  chestnuts, pines, oaks, etc. with soft black loam & many undershrubs, brambles, canes, iris [[strikethrough]] be [[strikethrough]] bearing pale blue blossoms, etc.  Some of the deep red Rhododendron flowers were seen.
After tiffin we passed thru a mountain side clothed by heavy virgin forest of many green leaved trees.  Runways of rodents & many streams of water & much dampness was seen here.  At 3 P.M. we had a
