We continued our way thru the forest over a very wet slippery clay road which ran well up on the side of the valley [[strikethrough]] & not [[/strikethrough]] away from the level valley bordering the Nam-ling river. The forest here has little of the appearance of that of Peru on the Amazon headwaters [[strikethrough]] but [[/strikethrough]] lacking palms almost absolutely. I only saw one member of this family, a small stembless [[sic]] maiden hair fern leaved sort. There are no tree ferns here either but the leafy white stemmed trees of fig like appearance are like those of S.A. & Africa also At noon we reached some cultivated fields at a place called Mang-sse where we made camp under some giant spreading fig trees where the road crossed a creek
