[[header note]] March 5 add [[/header note]] of the red stemmed figs trees with broad leaves were seen in the forest but no animal appear to eat the fruit now. The Mohammaden Shan hunters shot a ♀ Muntjac today. A shot a yg ♂ Gibbon & saw one other. Yesterday he saw two Ratufas chasing one another thru the trees. I met a small covey of bamboo partridges in the forest where they were scratching in the soft loam. [[strikethrough]] I [[/strikethrough]] They never leave the forest for the ricefields as do most gallinaceous birds of Asia. The forest of the hills is charming at this season. There are no annoying insects & the trees give a cool shade. [[strikethrough]] N [[/strikethrough]] The under shrubs are annoying only in the more open spots which are overgrown by long grass. The trees are evergreen laurel & figs chiefly but in habit are like an oaks & alders. The soil even on steep hillsides is a loose reddish loam & moist altho lichens are about owing to the porous rock which is limestone.
