After climbing thru a pass to an altitude of about 6000 feet we skirted the mountain side to Ma-li-ling where we camped at 5000 feet apparently. The village is located on the mountainside with a deep narrow valley below it. The tree growth is tropical without pines & only a few oaks & alders. The boundary was crossed two hours out of Ma-li-pa but no masonry monuments or mark was seen on the road. [[circled]] 16 [[/circled]] Night pleasantly cold. The country everywhere here is much broken & mountainous with only small, narrow valleys suitable for rice terraces. The valleys & ridges run in various directions & the country is confusing
