At 4 P.M. after office hours Albertson, Palmer & I went out to the golf link & played a round. The link are on the rolling plains around the raised graves of the Chinese & the ground is thus quite rough & full of hazards. Seven to a hole is a good average here
The customs officers, 3 English men & one Dane, live here in great luxury altho their pay is not large. The have horses to ride, shooting dogs, fine houses set in great open compounds far from Chinese quaters [[sic]]. These luxuries at home would cost several thousand dollars annually. Their office hours are short, 10 A M to 1 P.M. an hour off for tiffin & 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. The rainy season is said to be dreary often but there are sunny spells always when travel or sport is possible.
