At this season the wild fruit here consists of a yellow blackberry or brier of good taste, a red dry raspberry & a small cherry. The Chinese are very destructive to all vegetation & in order to get the cherries the [[sic]] cut the large limbs off. The result is there are very few cherry trees left & most have only a stubby growth of branches left.
The flowering season is now at its height but the forest does not present any large areas of floral display owing to the great number of pine, oak & alder trees. There are several species of Rhododendrons now in bloom & such trees & shrubs are covered by a solid mass of large flowers.
