Chinese village with a Shan one nearby. Here the dak bungalow is situated. The building was small, of one story with only 3 rooms & a small court with 2 sheds. During the day I saw bananas plants often & also a few Papaiyas. Rice is the only crop raised by the Shans except a few beans chilis & other vegetables. No forest was seen on the hillsides which are grass or scrub covered without any attempt at cultivation. I have seen along the road numbers of the giant ellipitical [[sic]] leaved fig trees which are preserved for shade trees. They have a large base of tangled roots exposed & very wide horizontal. The wooden supports of the bungalow were much eaten by [[strikethrough]] which [[/strikethrough]] termites & falling into decay.

Transcription Notes:
A "dak bungalow" was a government-maintained building for officials and travelers. For further explanation, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dak_bungalow.
