(13) The library of the [[?]] Museum has been my center of interest. Calcutta has made me realize what a severe task the British have in battling with the climate & governing as well as exploiting India. This place is excessively moist & enervating & is no place for a white man's home. Nine months of heat & moisture & only 3 cool or bearable months give Calcutta its hell. The men here are largely bachelors by necessity because British women would not endure the climate. The married men are also virtually bachelors, their wives being at home with the children or in the hills
