Hong Kong island from the sea side presents a picture of utter lack of human habitation, not a house or building or cleared space of ground being in evidence on the south side.  It is only when the steamer has rounded the east end that the city clustering to the steep hillside is visible & opposite it being Kowloon with its warves & large buildings of several stories.
